Industry Collaboration Event

Published on 27th February 2026

A unique set of operations occurred on the 27th February 2026, marking an industry collaboration event between GWR, GBBf, Network Rail, and the West Somerset Railway.

The movements were essentially to demonstrate the viability of alternative stabling locations for stock in the South West for use during current and future line closures, especially in relation to upcoming HS2 works in London. It also highlighted the industry collaboration between various companies. Two charters were operated from Bristol, both crewed by GBRf. 1Z50 09:05 Bristol Temple Meads – Goodrington operated via Norton Fitzwarren Triangle, Fairwater Yard, Exeter New Yard, Hackney Yard, and Goodrington. This train was formed of Locomotive Services Ltd Class 40 No. 40013 'Andania' (D213) and No. 50050 'Fearless' (D400) in top-and-tail formation with three LSL coaches, and conveyed GWR Managers with guests from industry partners. The second charter used GWR Hitachi IET No. 800036 'Dr Paul Stephenson OBE' (also crewed by GBRf), which operated as 1Z80 09:15 Bristol Temple Meads – Goodrington, following the same operating pattern as the first charter. A further movement using the GWR ‘Night Riviera’ stock with top and tail Class 57s also used the Norton Fitzwarren Triangle, with all three trains later posed in Fairwater Yard for a photo opportunity.

The Jungle Is Tamed

Published on 14th February 2026

Following our posting of images showing the excessive undergrowth that had accumulated at 40 Steps in October 2025, we are pleased to report that a huge effort has been made to clear the area for safe working and visibility.

In recent weeks, the area between Taunton Station and Staplegrove Road has been cut back and invasive species removed. While there are still some patches at the end of Taunton Station and behind Platform 1 still to tackle, this is a marked improvement from the previous views taken in October. It remains to be seen if Town Council will take notice and clear their side of the fence on Trenchard Way as undergrowth has also reached the road.

Heavy Haul Rail

Published on 14th February 2026

Heavy Haul Rail is now a new train operating company in the UK.

After the purchase of Freightliner by CMA CGM in late 2025, the bulk freight operations handled by Freightliner (and formerly Freightliner Heavy Haul) have again been separated into Freightliner Intermodal (owned by CMA CGM) and Heavy Haul Rail. This new company is now based in Birmingham. Locomotives/wagons will be operated separately from Freightliner. There will be a new livery with white HH Heavy Haul Rail branding applied; however, it will most likely take several years to re-band and repaint the fleet.

Heavy Haul Rail (formerly Freightliner) Class 66 locomotives No.66565 and No.66616 pass through Taunton on the 14th February 2026. The pair operating 6Y42 09:31 Westbury - Exeter St Davids with engineering materials being delivered to Exeter Central, where track near Pennsylvania Road was being replaced.
