9th May 2018
Too late the snow was in March! Thursday 9th May 2018 was full of excitement when a pair of Direct Rail Services Class 37's operated light engine overnight from their base at Crewe Gresty Bridge to Fairwater Yard. No.37218 and No.37259 arrived at 06:11 before collecting both of the Network Rail Snow Ploughs from Fairwater Yard (ZZA ADB 965231 & ZZA ADB 965209). The two veteran locomotives then formed the 7Z15 10:15 Fairwater Yard - Fairwater Yard via Highbridge Loop with the drift ploughs formed at either end of the locomotives. The annual snow plough test certainly raised a few eyebrows passing through the platforms at Taunton Station. The pair are pictured here passing Cogload Junction while working outbound to Highbridge in search of snow!

Direct Rail Services operated a light engine movement between their base at Crewe Gresty Bridge Depot and Plymouth on the 28th December 2017. No.57303 is seen leading No.37059 while working the 0Z63 09:35 Crewe Gresty Bridge - Plymouth diagram. The pair were being positioned in readiness to return a rake of stored Mk3 coaching stock from Laira Depot to Northern Trains on the 29th December. The rake of coaching stock was formerly operated by Virgin Trains (West Coast), painted in similar colours to their Pendolino EMU's. After use with Virgin the stock then found a new home with Anglia Railways until it was surplus to requirements and stored at Laira Depot pending a new operator. The stock will now be used as part of the new loco hauled diagrams with Northern Trains. The locomotives and stock are expected to return north on the 29th December 2017.

3rd August 2017
Thursday 3rd August 2017 provided the second heritage Class 37 of the week, passing through the Taunton area. Direct Rail Services Class 37/4 No. 37403 'Isle of Mull' made a very rare appearance hauling inspection saloon 'Caroline' working as the 2Z02 06:45 Willesden Brent to Willesden Brent via Newton Abbot. The locomotive currently carries full BR Large Logo livery and is named 'Isle of Mull' along with the famous 'Highland Terrier' embellishment to the loco side. Many of the Class 37/4 operated by DRS now carry the same former British Rail livery. The locomotive is pictured entering Devon having just exited from Whiteball Tunnel.

24th June 2017
Pathfinder Tours 'Mazey Day Cornishman' from Worcester to Penzance didn't quite go to plan on Saturday 25th June 2017 in one of the most public failures of railtour traction in a very long time. Direct Rail Services supplied two Class 37/0 locomotives (some of the oldest operational Class 37s on the UK network) for the charter. It was planned to be potentially the last pair of DRS Class 37s to visit Penzance, as they are currently being phased out by new Class 68 and 88 locomotives. Before departure from Worcester No.37069 sporadically shutdown with a CCB fault, and couldn't be reset, it was removed from the train. It was planned for sister locomotive No.37059 to go it alone and take the train forward. With load 10 in tow No.37059 reached Great Malvern where it developed a DSD fault. This fault was fixed after another 20 minutes. It was decided should the tour need to reach Penzance then a second locomotive would be needed and a Class 66/5 No.66525 was hired from Freightliner. So the colourful combination with Class 37 No.37059 doing all the work is seen passing Norton Fitzwarren running a mere 159 minutes behind schedule.

21st May 2017
DRS Class 68's visited Taunton on Sunday 21st May 2017 and this shot shows the results of an experiment by pressing the lens of the camera up against the square mesh installed on the 40 Steps footbridge. This effort allows the former 'classic' shot at 40 Steps to still be captured. The image shows that a reasonable shot is still possible, bringing back the possibility of all those traditional compositions we used once feature on Taunton Trains before the monstrosity of a bridge was installed at Chip Lane. The on board passengers enjoying the fine dining experience Class 68 No.67017 'Hornet' power's the train south towards Plymouth.
