The Class 47 has to be one of British Rail's most sensible investments. The British Built machines have certainly proved their worth since the initial locos rolled off the construction lines in 1964. No one could have predicted then, that a substantial number of the locomotives would still be working (albeit on lighter duties these days) in modern times. The Brush Type 4 was fitted with a Sulzer 12LDA28 double straight six unit producing 2,750 bhp, but de-rated in the late 1960's to 2,550 BHP due to cracks appearing within the crank case seem welds. The Class 47 has taken to just about any task asked of it, over the years it's been the subject of hundreds of improvements and modifications to allow the loco to evolve and adapt to the work that they have been asked to do. It's large plain body sides have made it a faculties locomotive to display just about any railway company livery with ease. Although in 2008 a significant amount of the Class are now dead and buried, a small fleet still solider on working weekend charters, and out of course movements. Some even engage in regular freight flows. There is no reason why the locomotives can't survive another 20 years, with the right care, regular and good quality maintenance the humble 'Duff' (as they were nicknamed) can easily perform to the highest standards required. The Brush Type 4 has been a regular visitor to Taunton since their birth nearly 45 years ago. This section aims to cover the sheer variety of workings, locomotives and most importantly .....liveries which have passed through the concrete platforms at Taunton.

Locomotive Services Ltd superbly-restored locomotives revisited Taunton on Saturday 31st August. No. 47593 'Galloway Princess' and No. 47501 'Craftsman' top and tailed 'The Statesman' charter. The 1Z86 05:12 Nottingham - Kingswear passes Norton Fitzwarren at full power heading to the Devon Riviera.

ROG Class 47/8 No. 47815 'Great Western' powers North passing Cogload Junction on Monday 10th june 2019 hauling the 5L46 Laira - Ely Papworth Sidings with more GWR Mk3 HST stock being taken for storage and hopefully onward use. The famous Cogload Junction flyover is now so overgrown the viaduct is no longer visiible in the background at this location.

GBRf Class 47s with Caledonian Sleeper liveried No.47727 leading No.47749 climb Whiteball Bank on Monday 3rd June 2019 hauling the 5Z43 08:56 Liara - Long Marston stock move. The train conveyed redundant GWR Mk3s and a powercar for storage at Long Marston. The train conveyed: Barrier 6336, 44078, 42173, 42247, 41187, 42169, 40808 and GWR powercar No.43056 (debranded and de-named).

GBRf Class 47s made a very rare appearance in the South West late on Sunday 2nd June 2019. Both locomotives were formerly owned by Colas Rail Freight. No.47749 is painted in BR Blue with GBRf embellishments, while No. 47727 'Edinburgh Castle' carries Highland Sleeper livery. The pair of locos operated the 5Z47 14:47 Reading Traincare Depot - Laira with a barrier vehicle in tow ready to move set of redundant Mk3 coaches back to Long Marston the following day.

Rail Operations Group (ROG) Class 47/8 No.47813 passes 40 Steps, Taunton on the 27th May 2019 hauling repaired Cross Country powercar No.43303 as the 5V84 08:29 Neville Hill - Laira. The Class 47 later failed near Totnes and had to be rescued by the very powercar it was towing.

The locomotive is pictured passing the former Creech St Michael Halt on route north with more Mk3 HST stock heading for stroage.

On Wednesday 15th May 2019 the immaculate Large Logo liveried Class 47 is pictured passing the former location of Creech St Michael station, returning north as the 0Z14 09:25 Goodrington Sands to Crewe light engine.

Having recently been through the Loco Services workshops at Crewe, Class 47 47790 has been returned back to its original British Rail number of No. 47593 'Galloway Princess'. The 0Z10 09:30 Crewe - Goodrington Sidings light engine move is pictured passing Taunton.
