The Class 47 has to be one of British Rail's most sensible investments. The British Built machines have certainly proved their worth since the initial locos rolled off the construction lines in 1964. No one could have predicted then, that a substantial number of the locomotives would still be working (albeit on lighter duties these days) in modern times. The Brush Type 4 was fitted with a Sulzer 12LDA28 double straight six unit producing 2,750 bhp, but de-rated in the late 1960's to 2,550 BHP due to cracks appearing within the crank case seem welds. The Class 47 has taken to just about any task asked of it, over the years it's been the subject of hundreds of improvements and modifications to allow the loco to evolve and adapt to the work that they have been asked to do. It's large plain body sides have made it a faculties locomotive to display just about any railway company livery with ease. Although in 2008 a significant amount of the Class are now dead and buried, a small fleet still solider on working weekend charters, and out of course movements. Some even engage in regular freight flows. There is no reason why the locomotives can't survive another 20 years, with the right care, regular and good quality maintenance the humble 'Duff' (as they were nicknamed) can easily perform to the highest standards required. The Brush Type 4 has been a regular visitor to Taunton since their birth nearly 45 years ago. This section aims to cover the sheer variety of workings, locomotives and most importantly .....liveries which have passed through the concrete platforms at Taunton.

LSL Class 47s No. 47805 'Roger Hosking MA 1925-2013 ' and No. 47593 'Galloway Princess' pass Fairwater Yard on the 27th September 2020 operating 1Z75 10:40 Penzance - York charter 'The Cornish Riviera Statesman' returning north. In the adjacent yard, No. 66415 'You Are Never Alone' can also be seen stabled between Network Rail HOBC duties.

LSL (Locomotive Services Limited) Class 47 locomotives No. 47593 'Galloway Princess' and No. 47805 'Roger Hosking MA 1925-2013 ' (D1935) double-head the 'Cornish Riviera Statesman' operating 1Z70 06:08 York to Penzance luxury dining train, captured passing the outskirts of Wellington at Longforth Bridge in Somerset on Friday 25th September 2020. The tour spent the weekend in Cornwall with a Saturday visit to Kingswear.

Rail Operations Group headed west on Monday 14th September 2020 with HST barrier coach 6340 in tow. The coach had recently undergone work at Eastleigh Works and now carries 'Rail Operations Group' branding after GWR no longer requires the use of these barrier vehicles. No. 47815 'Great Western' is seen passing through the un-kept station area while operating 5V84 10:141 Derby - Laira diagram to collect more HST stock for refurbishment and conversion.

No. 70000 'Britannia' 'Britannia' took over for the steam-hauled leg into Wales from Bristol.

The first charter to visit the southwest post-COVID-19 lockdown was 'The English Riviera Stateman' on Saturday 18th July 2020. The train was hauled by Locomotive Services Limited (LSL) Class 47/8 No. 47805 'Roger Hosking MA 1925-2013 ' (No.D1935). The Pullman dining service heads west at Nynehead with the 1Z37 05:37 Peterborough to Paignton heading for Devon.

It had also been two years since No. 47805 'Roger Hosking MA 1925-2013 ' had last visited the Taunton area.

DEPG Class 47/8 No. 47840 'North Star' stands in the Williton maintenance shed in early 2020 having been repainted into BR Blue livery and renumbered as No.47077 over the winter period. The locomotive is expected to leave the line in the Spring of 2020 for a hire period on the North Yorkshire Moors Railway.

The locomotive (formerly operated by Colas Rail Freight and named 'Robin of Templecombe') is now operated by GBRf. No.47739 worked light engine as the 0Z47 13:30 Leicester to Taunton where upon arriving it stabled in Platform 1. GBRf is using the locomotive for a series of route learning trips on the Okehampton Branch during Monday before it returns to Taunton for a brief period and then works onwards to Swindon. The Ex Works loco is pictured stabled in Platform 1 shortly after arrival.

Locomotive Services Ltd (LSL) Class 47 No. 47593 'Galloway Princess' and No. 47501 'Craftsman' pass Silk Mills in top and tail formation while hauling the 1Z86 05:12 Nottingham - Kingswear charter. Passengers on board the high class 'Statesman' charter tuck into their cook breakfasts as heritage Sulzer power hauls them towards the Devon Riviera.
