Weekend engineering work will soon take place between Tiverton Parkway and Plymouth meaning the closure of the South West mainline over the next four weekends. Weekend engineering work often brings additional traction to the area normally in the form of Mendip Rail Class 59's. Freight through Taunton at night can be somewhat sporadic at times. On the 27th Janaury, 66127 is captured at Taunton during a crew change while hauling the lengthy 6C39 from St Blazey to Newport Alexander Dock Junction. Hackney Yard (Newton Abbot) is now set up to receive/ recycle used rail from various track renewal sites around the South West. Regular Saturday and Sunday engineering trains now head to this destination to unload rail. Less than a mile from the location below, 56312 was captured for a second time in glorious Winter sunshine passing 40 Steps. More recently it would appear a third Class 56 (56303) will soon be joining 56311 and 56312, it's good to see this once popular Class can be kept operational for the mainline network. The next day the pair provided one of the most colorful sights possible on the modern railway. 56312 lead Colas Rail mini HOBC set with 47727 coupled to the rear of the train. Colas Rail kicked off the New Year in style with a truly outrageous and colorful move on January 19th. Colas use 56312 'Artemis' from British American Railways (BARS), the loco coupled with 47739 'Robin of Templcombe' provided a colorful combination for a light engine move destined for Tavistock Junction.
