More railway history was made in the South West on Saturday 10th June 2023, when a pair of class 73 locomotives powered a west bound train through Whiteball Tunnel into Devon for what is believed to be the first time. (A pair have previously worked east bound via this route). GB Railfreight operated Class 73/9s No. 73963 'Janice' and No.73965 are pictured sweeping down from Whiteball Tunnel approaching Burlescombe while operating the 5Z60 13:41 Weston-Super-Mare to Exeter Riverside New Yard, with empty coaching stock, which had earlier formed a GB Railfreight staff charter from Ashford International to Weston Super Mare.

Making a rare foray into the south west on the 10th June 2023. GBRf Class 73/9 locomotives No. 73963 'Janice' and No.73965 operate the empty stock from the GBRf staff charter through Creech St Michael. The staff tour originated from Ashford in Kent. While staff enjoyed he delights of Weston-super-Mare the empty stock operated as 5Z60 13:41 Weston-super-Mare - Exeter Riverside. The empty stock provided the first visit to Taunton of No.73965 and the first southbound run of Class 73s through Whiteball Tunnel into Devon.

GBRf Class 73/9 No.73964 is pictured in Platform 2 at Taunton having arrived on the 30th March 2021 having arrived with a route learner (0Z31 13:00 Westbury - Westbury via Taunton). The Class 73/9s owned by GB Railfreight were re-built by Wabtec at the Brush Traction works in Loughborough, between 2013 and 2016 and fitted with a more lightweight MTU engine offering around 1600HP.

GB Railfreight Class 73/9 No.73964 made a rare appearance in the Taunton area on Tuesday 30th March 2021. In glorious spring lighting conditions, No.73964 is captured passing Cats Hill Farm foot crossing near Creech St Michael operating a Colas Rail Freight route learner. The 0Z21 13:00 Westbury - Westbury via Taunton. This was the first appearance of a GBRf Class 79/9 since 2016 in the Taunton area.

GBRf liveried Class 73/9 No.73964 scuttles across the Somerset Levels having made a very brief and rare visit to Taunton on the 30th March 2021. The loco is pictured at Oath operating 0Z21 13:00 Westbury - Westbury via Taunton making the first appearance at Taunton of a 73/9 since 2016.

Having stabled at Taunton the previous night and the crew having collected their supplies from the Taunton Station Sushi Bar 'Dashi'. Class 73/9s No. 73952 'Janis Kong' and No. 73951 'Malcom Brinded' depart Taunton on Wednesday 8th February 2017 working the 0M50 09:45 Taunton - Derby RTC light engine move back to the Midlands.

Network Rail Class 73/9s No. 73951 'Malcom Brinded' and No. 73952 'Janis Kong' pass 40 Steps, Taunton under darkening skies on Tuesday 7th February 2017 working 0V84 10:03 Derby RTC - Plymouth. The pair later returned to Taunton and stabled for the night in the sidings behind Platform 1.

GBRf Class 73s No.73962 and No. 73963 'Janice' make an exceptionally rare appearance in the South West on the 16th July 2016. The pair were top and tailing with traditional Class 73s No. 73107 'Tracy' and No.73128 hauling Pathfinder Tours 'The Herd of Wildebeest' charter. The charter had first visited Paignton via the Southern route to Exeter St Davids. The 1Z74 16:24 Paignton - London Waterloo (via Taunton) climbs to Whiteball with the converted Class 73/9s leading the train.

GBRf also visited the West Somerset Railway on the 18th June 2016, but only hauling an empty stock movement, GB Railfreight's newly re-engineered Class 73/9's No.73961 and No.73964 led an empty coaching stock move from the 'GBRF Staff Special' tour which ran from Ashford International to Weston-Super-Mare. The 5Z62 12:30 Weston-super-Mare to Bishops Lydeard is seen passing Norton Fitzwarren onto the WSR for servicing and to allow the locomotives to change ends.

GBRf Class 73s lead a convoy of locomotives through 40 Steps 9th May 2005. The 0Z73 09:00 Bishops Lydeard to Old Oak Common was formed of No.73204 leading No.73209 No.73205 No.31271 and No.37190. The locos were returning from the 2005 Mixed Traffic Gala at the West Somserset Railway.
