The Class 47 has to be one of British Rail's most sensible investments. The British Built machines have certainly proved their worth since the initial locos rolled off the construction lines in 1964. No one could have predicted then, that a substantial number of the locomotives would still be working (albeit on lighter duties these days) in modern times. The Brush Type 4 was fitted with a Sulzer 12LDA28 double straight six unit producing 2,750 bhp, but de-rated in the late 1960's to 2,550 BHP due to cracks appearing within the crank case seem welds. The Class 47 has taken to just about any task asked of it, over the years it's been the subject of hundreds of improvements and modifications to allow the loco to evolve and adapt to the work that they have been asked to do. It's large plain body sides have made it a faculties locomotive to display just about any railway company livery with ease. Although in 2008 a significant amount of the Class are now dead and buried, a small fleet still solider on working weekend charters, and out of course movements. Some even engage in regular freight flows. There is no reason why the locomotives can't survive another 20 years, with the right care, regular and good quality maintenance the humble 'Duff' (as they were nicknamed) can easily perform to the highest standards required. The Brush Type 4 has been a regular visitor to Taunton since their birth nearly 45 years ago. This section aims to cover the sheer variety of workings, locomotives and most importantly .....liveries which have passed through the concrete platforms at Taunton.

From the LSL pool ScotRail-liveried No. 47712 'Lady Diana Spencer' working in ‘top and tail’ configuration with No. 57311 'The Institution of Mechanical Engineers' pass through Cogload Junction on Saturday 20th July 2024 with the ‘English Riviera Express’ 1Z60 0529- Bedford - Kingswear. LNER A4 Pacific No. 60007 'Sir Nigel Gresley' was ready and waiting at Taunton to take control of the tour onwards to Kingswear replacing No. 47712 'Lady Diana Spencer' with No. 57311 'The Institution of Mechanical Engineers' remaining on the rear of the train.

Scotrail Class 47/7 No. 47712 'Lady Diana Spencer' is pictured amongst the jungle at behind Platform 1 at Taunton Station on Saturday 21st July 2024. The loco arrived at Taunton leading Saphos Trains 'English Riviera Express Charter in top and tail formation with No. 57311 'The Institution of Mechanical Engineers' as 1Z60 05:29 Bedford - Kingswear. Upon arrival at Taunton the Scotrail liveried Class 47 was removed and reap laced with LNER A4 Pacific No. 60007 'Sir Nigel Gresley' for the steam leg to Kingswear.

The pair were operating Statesman Rail charter 1Z65 16:02 Penzance - Wolverhampton returning passengers from a visit to Mazey Day in Penzance.

The loco was removed from the English Riviera Express charter and stabled at Taunton pending repair/ collection. Photo taken by trained and qualified personnel.

LSL Class 47s No. 47593 'Galloway Princess' and No. 47810 'Crewe Diesel Depot' operate in top and tail formation run north through Fordgate in glorious morning sunshine on Tuesday 25th June 2024. The Saphos Trains ‘Welsh Marches Express’ charter 1Z49 05:47 Paignton - Shewsbury operated via Bristol. On arrival at Bristol ex-LNER B1 No. 61306 'Mayflower' which had already positioned from the West Somerset Railway would take over the train from Temple Meads to Shrewsbury and return.

The tour was held at Taunton a Cross Country service to pass before continuing to Bristol.

The Cornish Riviera Statesman railtour passed through the Taunton area on Thursday 23rd May 2024, with double-headed LSL (Locomotive Services Ltd) Class 47 locomotives No..47828 and No. 47712 'Lady Diana Spencer'. The dining charter 1Z68 04:12 Nantwich – Penzance is captured having just entered Devon through Whiteball Tunnel. The Statesman Charter also conveyed two Scotrail liveried Mk3 first class coaches within the consist.

Saphos Trains 'English Riviera Express' charter hauled by Southern Battle of Britain No. 34046 'Braunton' powers away from Taunton at Allerford on the 4th May 2024 with Intercity No.47828 remaining on the rear. The 1Z36 04:24 Nantwich - Kingswear departed Taunton 16 minutes ahead of schedule.

Having completed a visit to Windsor & Eton Riverside the previous day at part of the Statesman Rail charter program. Locomotive Services Ltd Class 47 locomotive No. 47805 'Roger Hosking MA 1925-2013 ' and No. 47712 'Lady Diana Spencer' (operating in top and tail formation) cross the Somerset Levels at Oath on Friday 3rd May 2024 running with the 5Z24 13:56 Goodrington CHS to Southall LSL empty coaching stock movement.

LSL Scotrail liveried Class 47/7 No. 47712 'Lady Diana Spencer' passes Norton Fitzwarren on the 1st May 2024 operating an empty stock move in top and tail formation with No. 47805 'Roger Hosking MA 1925-2013 '. The pair were operating 5Z19 08:40 Crewe - Goodrington Sidings in preparation for the next days Statesman Rail charter 'The Royal Windsor Statesman' to Windsor & Eton Riverside from Paignton. The consist also conveyed a BR Mk1 Kitchen Car on hire from Riviera Trains.

Statesman Rail operated the 'Cornish Riviera Statesman' on Saturday 9th September 2023. Two British Sulzer Locomotives from Locomotives Services Limited (LSL) double-headed the train. No. 47810 'Crewe Diesel Depot' and No. 47712 'Lady Diana Spencer' operating the 1Z28 05:00 Shrewsbury - Penzance dining charter. The pair emerge from the damp September mist with the southbound leg at Creech St Michael.

Statesman Rail operated their Cornish Riviera Statesman charter on Saturday 5th August 2023. Two LSL Class 47 locomotives No. 47805 'Roger Hosking MA 1925-2013 ' and No. 47712 'Lady Diana Spencer' operated 1Z25 05:25 Derby - Penzance. The charter passed Taunton on time at 09:24 with the southbound leg of the popular dining charter.

Statesman Rail operated a “Cornish Riviera Statesman” to Penzance on Saturday 5th August 2023, originating from Derby. Motive power was provided as usual in the shape of two Locomotive Services Ltd Class 47 locomotives, ScotRail liveried No. 47712 'Lady Diana Spencer' and BR Green No. 47805 'Roger Hosking MA 1925-2013 '. Managing to avoid the problems earlier in the day caused by Storm Antoni, the duo were in fine form and on time as they powered towards Cogload Junction with the 1Z36 1605 Penzance to Derby.

The pair operated 1Z27 05:00 Wolverhampton - Kingswear. Upon arrival at Taunton No. 47712 'Lady Diana Spencer' was removed to stabled at Taunton for the day while LNER A4 No. 60007 'The Spirit of Tom Kendell' was added for the trip through to Kingswear.

Operating the first of four charter trains to pass through Taunton on the 24th June 2023. The Cornish Mazey Day Statesman was operated by LSL locomotives No. 47805 'Roger Hosking MA 1925-2013 ' and No.47614 operating 1Z64 05:22 Solihull - Penzance. The latter locomotive was not in good health and was leaving a healthy trail of exhaust in its wake. The pair are pictured passing Cogload Junction.

LSL locomotives No.47614 (No.47853) and No. 47805 'Roger Hosking MA 1925-2013 ' power north at Cogload Junction in the evening sunlight while operating 1Z65 16:02 Penzance - Solihull.
