The Class 47 has to be one of British Rail's most sensible investments. The British Built machines have certainly proved their worth since the initial locos rolled off the construction lines in 1964. No one could have predicted then, that a substantial number of the locomotives would still be working (albeit on lighter duties these days) in modern times. The Brush Type 4 was fitted with a Sulzer 12LDA28 double straight six unit producing 2,750 bhp, but de-rated in the late 1960's to 2,550 BHP due to cracks appearing within the crank case seem welds. The Class 47 has taken to just about any task asked of it, over the years it's been the subject of hundreds of improvements and modifications to allow the loco to evolve and adapt to the work that they have been asked to do. It's large plain body sides have made it a faculties locomotive to display just about any railway company livery with ease. Although in 2008 a significant amount of the Class are now dead and buried, a small fleet still solider on working weekend charters, and out of course movements. Some even engage in regular freight flows. There is no reason why the locomotives can't survive another 20 years, with the right care, regular and good quality maintenance the humble 'Duff' (as they were nicknamed) can easily perform to the highest standards required. The Brush Type 4 has been a regular visitor to Taunton since their birth nearly 45 years ago. This section aims to cover the sheer variety of workings, locomotives and most importantly .....liveries which have passed through the concrete platforms at Taunton.

Fragonset Class 47/7 No.47703 is pictured in Platform 6 at Taunton on the 22nd April 2006. The loco had arrived operating 0Z47 14:48 Bristol Temple Meads - Taunton light engine to join 'The Devonian' charter later that evening.

Having arrived at Minehead on the 24th September 2005, Cotswold Rail Class 47 locomotives No.47813 and No.47316 start to change ends. No.47316 had failed at Bristol earlier in the trip and to be switch formation at Bristol. The Heartland Rail charter 1Z46 06:15 Wolverhampton - Minehead operated through to Minehead.

Cotswold Rail Class 47 No.47813 and No.47813 pass Doniford in top and tail formation on the 24th September 2005 operating Heartland Rail charter the 'West Somerset Excursion' 1Z47 16:50 Minehead - Wolverhampton. No.47813 had failed on the southbound trip in the morning at Bristol and was left on the rear of the set for the return trip to Wolverhampton.

No.47316 remained on the rear of the train having failed at Bristol on the southbound trip.

Kingfisher Railtours operated 'The Cornish Riviera' charter on the 29th August 2005. West Coast Railways provided silver-buffered No.47854 to haul 1Z55 06:52 Ealing Broadway - Penzance. The tour was later returned to Exeter with SR Westcountry No. 34067 'Tangmere' before the Class 47 took over for the run back to London.

Freightliner Class 47/0 No.47150 is pictured at Bishops Lydeard on the 14th July 2005. The loco had spent the day swapping stored Mk3 trailers between Bishops Lydeard and Laira. Coaches 41162 41114 40422 42095 42231 42232 and 42233 were moved from Bishops Lydeard to Laira and later replaced with Mk3 coaches 44068, 42305, 42303 and 42302. Once at Bishops Lydeard stored HST powercars were then formed up at either end to take the stock to Minehead.

Freightliner Class 47 No.47150 powers through Longlands Farm on the 14th July 2005 operating 5Z49 15:06 Laira - Bishops Lydeard. The stock transfer move conveyed former Virgin Trains Mk3 vehicles 44068, 42305, 42304,42303 and 43302 from store at Laira. This was one of two stock moves which were carried out by Frieghtliner on this day. Upon arrival from Laira reversal moves took place in Fairwater Yard to gain access to the West Somerset Railway.

No.47150 hauls No.20096, No.20905 and No. 55019 'Royal Highland Fusilier' operating 0Z55 11:58 Barrow Hill - Totnes.
