27th June 2026 The former Great Western Railway (GWR) Goods Office in Taunton is a historic railway building constructed around 1920. Located on Canal Road, it stands as one of the few surviving remnants of Taunton's railway heritage and sits within the ongoing Firepool regeneration project. It served the railway network for nearly 45 years. General use stopped in 1965, though it continued to handle bulk coal deliveries until 1972. The Office is pictured on the 27th June 2026. 22nd November 2025 A vast improvement to Station Road, Taunton, has been the clearance of undergrowth and buddleia, which had been allowed to grow over the top of and out of the walls of the former railway abutment wall. Councilor Mike Rigby (Independent) has been instrumental in improving the appearance of the town and station area. It has taken Mike several years of persistence to get Network Rail to cut back the undergrowth, making the area look much smarter and safer for pedestrians, not having to dodge the dangling brambles. 22nd November 2025 New railings have been installed, replacing the original Victorian railings on the walking approach to Taunton Station (south side) from Station Road, and the pathway has also been improved with new tarmac. The previous railings were life expired, and the pavement area was uneven. While the railings are not a direct replacement, they are in keeping with the previous heritage look. (Photo: Paul Clarke)

1st December 2023 Demolition work continued at pace on the former GWR Water Tower located adjacent to Platform 2 at Taunton on the 1st December 2023. Such was the study construction of the tower it was taking contractors some time to break the building down and removed the supporting steels which once held the water tank above the building structure. 21st November 2023 Work continues on the demolition of the former GWRSA Railway Club with most of the later buildings now cleared the original Great Western water tower now remains. With the local pigeon population having been served notice work will soon begin on removing the brick structure. This image taken on the 21st November 2023 shows the current progress. 10th November 2023 The former Taunton GWRSA Social Club and Railway Working Mans Club began demolition during November 2023. The building has stood empty after premature closure after developers purchased the land around 2017. The railway mans club was once a bustling local pub/ club typical of its time, where working men would gather for a pint after work. In later years the Taunton Railway Sports and Social club also provided huge community benefits hosting nightly Skittles league matches, Darts leagues, Pool matches. It was well used and well liked by locals. Many would gather at the back door entrance to witness passing steam charter services which would pause in Platform 5, and the social club contained many railway artefacts and railway pictures on the walls. Evening slide and video evenings were also held in the private social rooms by the WSR Association. 30th May 2021 The 'Dashi' Café is now reopen on Platform 2 at Taunton following a period of closure during the lock-down. Passengers can access the Café from both inside the station and outside the station opposite the Great Western Hotel. 19th July 2020 The new Taunton Station Car Park has now begun to show real progress after months of delays to the project. The steelwork now shows the full height of the car park which will tower above the station and may also provide additional photographic interest (especially for those photographers who use a pole!).
