 The Golden Hour

Despite many hot summer days there have been few occasions in 2022 with long periods of good evening sunlight.

Passing Cogload Junction during the golden hour, LMS Pacific No. 46233 'Duchess of Sutherland' is pictured passing the golden grasses with West Coast Railways Class 47 No.47772 doing all the work at the rear of the train. The pair were returning north with 'The Royal Duchy' 1Z37 16:05 Par - Bristol Temple Meads.

The Railway Touring Company operated 'The Royal Duchy' charter on Sunday 31st July 2022.

No. 46233 'Duchess of Sutherland' and No.47772 operated 1Z34 08:12 Bristol Temple Meads in 'top and tail' formation with No.47772 providing power from the rear. Shortly after departing from Taunton Station the LMS Pacific is pictured passing Silk Mills.

The English Riviera Express

Saphos Trains operated the 'English Riviera Express' charter 1Z60 05:05 Kettering - Kingswear on Saturday 30th July 2022.

Owing to the risk of potential lineside fires the leading Class 47 remained on the train at Taunton to assist No. 70000 'Britannia' into Devon and back.

LSL Class 47 locomotives No. 47805 'Roger Hosking MA 1925-2013 ' and No. 47501 'Craftsman' pass Norton Fitzwarren on the 23rd July 2022 hauling 1Z45 04:57 Derby - Penzance the 'Cornish Riviera Statesman'.

West Somerset Steam Express

The Railway Touring Company charter the 'West Somerset Steam Express' operated on the 23rd July 2022.

The tour was originally planned to steam hauled throughout by LMS Jubliee 'Bahamas' but due to a steam ban imposed on the national network by the recent hot weather, West Coast Railways used two heritage Class 47s for the journey. No.47813 and No.47772 operated in top and tail formation as 1Z50 07:13 London Paddington - Minehead. The charter arrived 20 minutes early into Bishops Lydeard and provided passengers with the chance for a leg stretch before WSR steam locomotives No.9351 and No. 7822 'Foxcote Manor' were added for the trip through to Minehead. Unlike the national network preserved railways can currently operate steam services.

Infrastructure Inspection

Large Logo Class 37/4 No. 37418 'An Comunn Gaidhealach' made its first visit to Taunton in 21 years on Friday 22nd July 2022.

The British Rail large logo liveried loco complete with highland stag decals passes Taunton East Junction operating 2Z00 09:28 Cardiff Central - Ealing Broadway via Taunton with inspection saloon 'Caroline' in tow. At Taunton the train reversed heading back to Ealing Broadway.

The Torbay Riviera Pullman

The retro Intercity HST colours continued at Taunton on the 20th July 2022.

The Midland Pullman special charter HST formed of No. 43049 'Neville Hill' and No. 43046 'Geoff Drury 1930-1999' operated 'The Torbay Riviera Pullman' 1Z69 06:51 Doncaster - Paignton. The colorful Intercity colours are captured at Taunton passing GWR 'Castle' HST No.43162.

Cross Country 'Executive'

The Cross Country Intercity 'Executive' livery applied to No.43184 (formerly No.43384) has now been in service for several weeks with Cross Country travelling the length of the country each day.

The superb HST retro-repaint outshopped in style by Laira Depot has been operating and turning the heads of enthusiasts and the general public who remember seeing the latest British Rail livery operating in the 1980s. We have put together a selection of images from Saturday 16th and Sunday 17th July 2022 of the powercar operating in the Taunton area for your enjoyment, and we hope to continue featuring this latest n n the coming months.

Freightliner Class 66/6 No.66620 passes light engine through the weed infested 40 Steps, Taunton on the 17th July 2022.

Freightliner was operating 0C60 11:43 Exeter St Davids - Newbury route learning run.

English Riviera Express

Saphos Trains operated their English Riviera Express charter from Cardiff Central to Kingswear on Saturday 16th July 2022.

The tour operated via Bath Spa and Westbury before heading west Taunton. LSL locomotives No.47614 (No.47853), and No. 47805 'Roger Hosking MA 1925-2013 ' operated the train in top and tail formation. As normal the lead locomotive (No.47614) was removed at Taunton and stabled in the sidings behind Platform 1, allowing Steam Locomotive No. 70000 'Britannia' to take the tour forward to Kingswear with No. 47805 'Roger Hosking MA 1925-2013 ' remaining on the rear to assist with stock movements at Kingswear.

In the evening sunlight at Wick on the Somerset Levels LSL Class 47 No.47614 powers eastbound on Saturday 16th July 2022. The locomotive was operating in top and tail formation with No. 47805 'Roger Hosking MA 1925-2013 ', returning with 'The English Riviera Express' charter 1Z63 16:35 Kingswear - Cardiff Central which operated via Westbury and Bath Spa.

Covid Celebrities

The two GWR Covid-19 'celebrity' IETs visited Taunton within minutes of one another on Wednesday 13th July 2022.

Both units had special liveries applied during the Covid19 pandemic, one thanking Keyworkers for all their hard work during the lockdown periods, and another had a facemask applied to remind passengers to wear theirs while travelling by rail.

GWR Hitachi IET No.802020 wearing 'Thankyou keyworkers’ livery works alone on Wednesday 13th July 2022, captured at Eastbrook running westbound on the 1C74 09:04 London Paddington to Newquay service.

Hitachi IET No.800321 'The Mask' works the grade past Eastbrook bridge approaching Whiteball Summit with the 1A81 10:55 Paignton to London Paddington GWR service on Wednesday 13th July 2022.

BR Britannia Class 4-6-2 No. 70000 'Britannia' and SR Bullied 'West Country' No. 34046 'Braunton' double-head the latest Saphos Trains steam tour from Taunton into South Devon on Wednesday 13th July 2022.

Making use of both locomotives that are currently out-stationed at the West Somerset Railway for use on Saphos workings the pair are captured at Eastbrook having just cleared the summit at Whiteball with the 'Golden Hind' charter, operating as 1Z50 07:44 Slough to Plymouth. The tour was initially diesel hauled by LSL Class 47 locomotives No. 47810 'Crewe Diesel Depot' and No. 47501 'Craftsman' from Slough to Taunton via Swindon and Bristol with both steam locomotives being added to the train at Fairwater Yard. No. 47501 'Craftsman' remaining attached on the rear for assistance with shunt moves at Kingswear.

DB Cargo/ EWS liveried Class 66 No.66155 passes Cogload Junction in the evening sunlight on Monday 11th July 2022.

The loco was operating 6G71 15:22 Cliffe Vale - St Blazey 12 empty JIA china clay wagons for loading in Cornwall.

Colas Rail Freight operated an overnight engineers train on the Okehampton branch on Saturday 9th/ Sunday 10th July.

Two Colas Class 70 locomotives (No.70815 and No.70808) operated short top and tailed train to be loaded with spent ballast/ spoil. The pair returned north through Taunton on Sunday 10th July 2022 operating 6C26 08:15 Crediton - Westbury.

Locomotive Services Ltd popular large-logo Class 47 No. 47593 'Galloway Princess' took the lead end of Saphos Charter 'The English Riviera Express' on Saturday 9th July.

The locomotive operated 1Z60 06:40 High Wycombe - Kingswear in top and tail formation with partner No. 47810 'Crewe Diesel Depot'. Upon arrival at Taunton No. 47593 'Galloway Princess' was removed and remained in the tamper sidings behind Taunton Station for the day, while steam locomotive No. 70000 'Britannia' was added for the onward journey to Kingswear. This week No. 47810 'Crewe Diesel Depot' remained on the rear of the train to assist with stock movements at Kingswear.

Testing Testing

Colas Rail Freight operated a late evening test train through Taunton on Friday 8th July 2022.

The colourful Class 37 No.37175 passed Taunton at 21:00 with a Network Rail test train heading for Reading Triangle Sidings. The train was formed of coaching stock 96608 (Network Rail Brake Force Runner), 6262 (Network Rail Generator Van), 9810 (Network Rail Support Coach, former Scotrail), 999606 (Ultrasonic Test Train coach - UTU5) and DBSO 9702.

The Cornish Lunch

West Coast Railways visited the southwest with two heritage Class 47 locomotives in 'top and tail' formation hauling The Northern Belle dining set on Friday 8th July 2022.

No.47826 lead the 1Z57 11:30 Bristol Temple Meads - Par leg of the 'Cornish Lunch' charter and later in the evening No.47804 hauled the return leg as 1Z58 15:27 Par - Bristol Temple Meads. We have featured images from the tour passing through the area below.

Learing the Route

After recent visits of Direct Rail Services Class 37 locomotives on route learning/ driver training trips to Taunton during June, a Class 57/3 locomotive (formerly operated by ROG) appeared on the week commencing 4th July 2022.

No.57305 operated a series of route learning trips between the Midlands and Taunton, and also stabled at Taunton overnight. The route learning was routine route refreshers for traffic to Bridgwater and Berkeley, and also route learning of the Severn Tunnel for the forthcoming diversion of the Daventry – Wentloog Tesco train.

In addition Freightliner also operated a route learner using powerhaul liveried No.66414 on Saturday 9th July running as 0C61 09:27 Westbury Cement Terminal - Exeter St Davids and return.

 Retro Re-paint for Cross Country

Cross Country unveiled their tribute to the classic Intercity 125 with a retro re-paint of HST powercar No.43184 (formerly No.43384).

The powercar has recently undergone an extensive overhaul at Laira Depot. No.43184 appeared in the freshly outshopped Intercity 'Executive' livery lead the late running 1S51 12:27 Plymouth - Edinburgh service seen at Taunton on Wednesday 6th July 2022 with standard Cross Country powercar No.43303 at the rear.

English Riviera Heritage Diesels

The English Riviera Express charters provide the chance to capture heritage Class 47 locomotives from the Locomotive Services Ltd (LSL) fleet.

Each charter operates to Taunton from its departure point in 'top and tail' formation. The lead locomotive from each trip is removed at Fairwater Yard and remains stabled at Taunton for the day, while the rear locomotive on each trip continues with the main charter to assist with coaching stock movements at Kingswear. The LSL Class 47 fleet is kept in excellent condition and are painted in a great selection of former British Railways liveries from the past. The below gallery features some of the operations for the class members for each tour.

Steam at the Double!

Saturday 2nd July 2022 provided Taunton with two steam locomotive charters operating in the area.

Saphos Trains operated the 'English Riviera Express' charter from Poole to Kingswear. This charter operated with Class 47 locomotives (No. 47810 'Crewe Diesel Depot' and No. 47593 'Galloway Princess') in top and tail formation to Fairwater Yard where No. 70000 'Britannia' was added for the trip to Kingswear and back. The second visitor was Southern Region Merchant Navy No. 35028 'Clan Line'. This locomotive is a very rare visitor to the south west due to its full time commitments with the Belmond British Pullman, the last time it visited Taunton was 2018. No. 35028 'Clan Line' The Railway Touring Company charter 'The Atlantic Coast Express' with a circular trip from London Waterloo to London Waterloo via Yeovil, Exeter, Taunton and Bristol.
