A small shunting incident occurred at Taunton East Junction on the 27th May 1986 when BR Blue Class 08 No.08576 de-railed on points while shunting empty NKV newspaper vans between platforms at Taunton.
The Class 08 became impaled by its centre wheel, with the front and rear wheelsets leaving the track. The loco blocked the down lines into Taunton, so wrong line working was set up to allow some passenger services still to pass through the area.
The re-railing team/ train based at Laira Depot was mobilised and moved to Taunton by BR Large Logo Class 50 No. 50010 'Monarch', a team was assembled on site and the Class 08 'jacked and packed' back onto the rails before being moved back into Taunton Station.
