The Morning Double

BR Block Class 37 No.37232 pilots No. 50035 'Ark Royal' depart from Taunton on the 21st March 1986.

The pair were operating 1B18 06:35 Bristol Temple Meads - Plymouth service formed of four Mk1 passenger coaches and the remaining train made up from mail vans.

BR Blue Class 37 No.37013 passes 40 Steps, Taunton on the 20th March 1986 in the low morning sunlight.

The loco was hauled a rake of loaded mineral wagons (possibly originating from Meldon Quarry).

Operating an Intercity Cross Country service No.43128 and No.43131 arrive into Taunton at Taunton East Junction on the 19th March 1986 operating the 07:00 Newcastle - Plymouth service, taken from Obridge viaduct.

 Howe Hauls 1B18

BR Large Logo Class 50 No. 50023 'Howe' passes 40 Steps on the 19th March 1986 while operating 1B18 06:35 Bristol Temple Meads - Plymouth.

The train was formed from five Mk1 coaches and four parcels vans, and oddly feasted just a single loco instead of the booked pair.

BR Large Logo Class 50 passes between Taunton East Junction and Taunton Station on the 15th March 1986 arriving with the Liverpool Lime Street - Penzance service.

The adjacent yards can be seen full of wagon load traffic for which Taunton was a hive of activity.


 Valient Scatters Pidgoens

A flock of pigeons scatters as English Electric Class 50 No. 50015 'Valiant' hurtles through the centre road at Taunton on the 15th March 1986.

The large logo liveried loco was operating the 09:32 Penzance - London Paddington service.

Class 50 Transfer


Published on 15th March 1986

Class 50 locomotives No. 50008 'Thunderer' and No. 50021 'Rodney' are pictured stabled on the former Taunton Shed sidings on the 15th March 1986 with No.31298.

The two Class 50s were being moved from Laira to Doncaster by the Class 31 having arrived the previous evening on the 14th March to stable for the night before continuing onwards to Doncaster.

 Ark Royal Wakes Up Early

BR Large Logo Class 50 No. 50035 'Ark Royal' is pictured passing 40 Steps on the 11th March 1986 operating the early morning 1B18 06:35 Bristol Temple Meads - Plymouth service.

The train on this occasion only having a single locomotive instead of the booked pair, the consist included 5 Mk1 passenger coaches and 5 parcels vans.

 Silcock Express

Published on 8th March 1986

BR Blue Class 47 No.47324 is pictured at 40 Steps on the 8th March 1986 passing between the two semaphore signals hauling the 'Silcock Express' cartic wagons.

No.47324 lasted in traffic until 1992 when it was damaged in a derailment at Castleton.

 Class 45 Taunton East

BR Blue Class 45 'Peak' No.45036 visited Taunton on the 3rd March 1986 and is pictured in Taunton East Yard stabled between duties.
